HB 43 – Establish Standards for Surgical Technology

Bill Summary

This bill would require hospitals to employ or contract surgical technologists to meet one of the following requirements:

  • Completion of an accredited program for surgical technologists with a maintained credentials from theĀ  National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
  • Completion of a surgical technology training program from the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or US Public Health Service
  • Documentation of employment to practice surgical technology in a licensed hospital or ambulatory surgical facility or documentation of employment to practice surgical technology during the two years following December 31, 2019.

The bill would allow hospitals to contract with recent graduates of surgical technology programs for a 12 month probationary period before completion of a national certification.
